And the Sahara Wins!

The Sahara

I narrowed down my Morocco sketches and photographs to three potential landscape paintings – a valley in the Atlas Mountains, the Saharan dunes, and farmland south of Casa Blanca.

While I would love to paint all three, alas! There just aren’t enough hours to go around between the day job, the landscape painting, and life in general.

To break the tie, I showed the three landscapes to my friends and asked them to vote on their favorite. They all chose the Sahara.

So the Sahara wins! I think it will make an excellent painting. The orange sand contrasts beautifully with the blue sky, and the shadows cast by the setting sun create interesting patterns of light and dark.

Next steps: Create a series of sketches based on the above photograph to play with dimensions, color saturation, composition, etc. I love this part of the process! I will post pictures of my progress, so be sure to check back in soon.
